Make your own flavoured water
Enjoy a change from drinking plain water by making delicious healthy flavoured water at home. All you need is a large plastic or glass jug and some fresh fruit or vegetables. It is the fruit and vegetables that give the water a delicious flavour so choose ones that your family likes. Good ideas are:
- oranges
- lemons
- limes
- strawberries
- pineapple
- kiwifruit
- apple (green apples are especially good)
- berries (such as frozen boysenberries)
- cucumber
- fresh ginger
- mint leaves.
Slice the fruit or vegetables and put in the bottom of your jug. You can use just one fruit or vegetable, or a combination (eg. oranges and lemons). You only need about half a cup of fruit. Fill jug with cold tap water and leave it to sit for 30 minutes or longer. You can put the jug in the fridge or add ice cubes if you like chilled water. Then your water is ready to enjoy.
Use a clear or see-through jug if you want to see the flavour ingredients - this might encourage your family to drink more of the water too! Adding fresh fruit or vegetables to water is a healthy way to make flavoured drinks at home. It's almost sugar-free and you can add as much or as little of the fruits and vegetables as you have. Even one sliced orange or lemon is enough to make water more tasty.
