Preparing homemade baby food: Helpful hints

  • Always wash and dry your hands before preparing your baby’s food.
  • Use a clean plate (or bowl) and spoon. Don’t share the spoon with your baby – you may pass germs to your baby if you do.
  • Remove the skins and seeds from fruit and vegetables before you cook or purée them.
  • Add liquid (breast milk or infant formula) to give a soft and smooth purée.
  • To purée your baby’s food, use a blender, food processor or push it through a sieve.
  • Don’t add salt, sugar, honey, soy sauce, cream, butter or margarine to your baby’s food.
  • Most baby foods can be kept in a covered container in the refrigerator for 48 hours.
  • Homemade baby food can be frozen in ice cube trays and used over the next 3-4 weeks.
