Hopscotch

Playing hopscotch is a fun and easy outdoor game for kids of any age. Younger children may need to jump with two feet or hold an adult’s hand to hop between the squares.

You will need:

  • Chalk
  • A stone or small rock.

What to do: With the chalk draw eight squares in the pattern shown in the photo above. The squares should all be the same size and be easily big enough to hop in without touching the lines. Bigger squares will mean you need to hop further, while smaller squares will make it harder to avoid touching the lines while hopping from square to square. Number the squares from one to eight.

How to play: Each person takes turns. Starting with the first box, throw the stone so it lands in box 1. Hop over the box with the stone in it and keep hopping so you land in each box. When you come to the double boxes, jump so you have one foot in each box. When you get to the end, turn around and hop/jump back. Stop before the box with the stone in it and bend and pick it up. If at any time you touch the line with your foot, or lose your balance, it is the next person’s turn.

Take turns moving through each box, remembering to take care not to step on the lines. It will get harder and harder to throw the stone accurately into the boxes that are further away.
